Grad school update

I received word approximately 37 minutes ago that I’ll be offered financial support at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
I don’t know if I’ll take this offer or not, but I am strongly considering it. I’ll be going down for their graduate recruitment weekend February 23-24 and will evaluate what I see.
But it’s nice to know that […]

GRE software

I took the GRE in late September.
Yesterday, I received the GRE Powerprep software in the mail. This is the prep software that they send you for free after you register. Granted, I didn’t register very far in advance - 2-3 weeks maximum. But it was January 20 when it arrived, not that I really needed […]

Riemann Sphere

I learned about the Riemann Sphere tonight in Complex Analysis.
I like my classes this semester. That’s nice. Even Classical Mechanics might be OK.
I don’t know where I’m going to school yet next fall. For one, I’ve yet to hear anything official, and for another, I’m not sure whether I’d pick UNL or ISU were I […]

Graduate school and “The Office”

Hey all. I really intended to blog more frequently. I really did. And maybe I will soon. But right now, I’m going to talk about graduate schools. I’m sure you’re all interested.
I took the general GRE test yesterday. I’m so glad that’s over. I do not actually know how well I needed to do, but […]

Class is in session

Well, folks, I’ve officially started my last year as an undergraduate. It’s weird, because I’m experiencing Yellowstone withdrawl at the same time I’m experience the beginning-of-the-year anxiety and excitement. Fun! Some thoughts…

Congrats again to Mike, for passing his algebra qualifier at ISU! Now you just have to worry about that darn analysis…
Speaking of […]

One year left

Well, the junior year is in the books. Grades are out yet, but I don’t expect any shocks. (If I get a B in quantum mechanics, I won’t be shocked.)
Otherwise, I’ve just been hanging out the last couple of days. Amy and I watched the season 2 finale of NBC’s “The Office” on Thursday night. […]

One down

Well, I finished quantum mechanics this morning. Our professor moved our last exam (not comprehensive) to this morning, so we’re done! Otherwise, things are fairly relaxed for this time of the semester. Outside of my honors seminar, all my remaining work is take-home: an easy number theory exam as well as an assignment that I’ve […]

Culpepper = T.O.? or “Give me some sugar, baby!”

A nice comparison by someone who dealt with both of them in one way or another.
I went to Hench’s wedding on Friday. It was a really nice ceremony. I saw some Brassworks folks there (Paul Baumgart played his trumpet, and then Rick and his wife were there, as well as Jeff Kunkel) as well […]

Scholarship essay question

Last year, I successfully applied for a small scholarship from Prairiewave. I responded to a question that asked, “What one thing do you wish technology did for you that it doesn’t do today?” I said that I wished it would drive my car. Come to think of it, that’s a pretty odd answer, but I […]

The most awesome classroom move ever

So I was sitting in my Honors seminar this morning when our professor announced that he decided to move our midterm, which was scheduled for a week from today (March 21) up to this Thursday (March 16) — who does that?? Ordinarily this would not have been the end of the world (and it probably […]
